If I didn’t already live here, the newly re-modeled Tropicana Resort would be my new first-choice Vegas destination. Tucked across from the MGM and New York/New York on the south end of the Strip, the Trop’s view, value, new rooms and huge grassy pool area would make me brave the I-15 from either direction, or jump on any airplane.

All New South Beach Styling

Instead of the recent wave of glass towers that has made the famous Las Vegas skyline start to look like Hartford, CT, the Tropicana Resort underwent a modern twist on its classic design. Despite the woes of the national economy, the Trop just completed Phase 1 of a $180 million dollar restoration plan. Their bold confidence has really paid off and lucky guests are sure to spread the news back in their hometowns about a fun, classy nostalgia that has returned to prominence on the Strip.

Remodeled Rooms feature Flat-screen TV’s, Plantation shutters, and new euro-top beds

The Nikki Beach and Cafe Nikki brand fits right into the new look Tropicana and promises to attract a younger party crowd that is already mixing well with long-time fans of the resort. “Mob Experience” is the new, interactive attraction at the Tropicana, which adds fuel to the desire to relax, kick-back with a martini and talk about the old days with interesting strangers of all ages.

One of the Best Pool Areas in Vegas

James Bond, Elvis Presley and Ann-Margaret made the Tropicana pool famous in “Diamonds Are Forever” and “Viva Las Vegas”. The huge, 4-acre pool has lost none of its fun, classy, old glitter, yet the grassy areas surrounding it seem more vibrant and alive than ever before. For those who prefer a little shade with their sun, few pools in Vegas can match the something-for-everyone appeal of the Tropicana pool. (Daybeds and cabanas are available to rent for those who plan to eat, drink and lounge all day.)

With the addition of the Nikki Beach Club, guests even have their choice of pool experience. Open to the public for a price, Nikki Beach features live DJ’s, exotic cocktails and even private, air-conditioned teepees for those who don’t want to break a sweat as they party like rock stars poolside.

Attractions and Shows

The new show “Mob Experience” at the Tropicana should not be missed for any fan of Las Vegas history. The interactive glimpse into the past features is riveting and made personal by various entertaining tour guides along the way. It features 157 different artifacts from the mob-era, including Meyer Lansky’s Medal of Freedom and Mickey Cohen’s actual living room set. Tickets are $39.99/pp and tours are catered in small groups.

For those who liked being assigned a passenger ID in the Titantic exhibit that was at the Trop up until last year, you’re ultimate fate at the end of the “Mob Experience” tour is, shall we say, also uncertain.

The Tropicana Comedy Club currently currently features funnyman Brad Garrett. Tickets are reasonably priced at $39 and $59 (plus tax). Aside from just performing up on stage, Brad also makes unexpected visits around the resort and often surprises guests while they’re checking-in.

Feel like catching “Midnight Train to Georgia” or “Heard It Through the Grapevine”? Seven-time Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight performs Tuesdays-Saturdays in the newly revamped Tropicana main theater. Tickets start at just $40. America’s Got Talent finalists Recycled Percussion also perform at the Tropicana. Or, for those in the mood for a mix of DJ’s and live music, check out the brand new, 4,000 square foot Ambhar Lounge.

Now through December 27, 2011, the Tropicana has special room and 2-for-1 show packages to see Recycled Percussion, starting at $59 during the week and $99 on week-ends. The deal also includes $10 off tickets to see Brad Garret, VIP check-in and late check-out options.

Dining

Two new restaurants at the new Tropicana cater to steak and seafood lovers and lovers of gourmet Italian food. Both restaurants are open and breezy and decorated in a classy, understated South Beach style. Biscayne features certified fresh fish and juicy cuts of premium steak. Bacio features signature salads, pasta and pizza along with an extensive and unique wine list.

Enjoy a Relaxing Breakfast on the Patio at Cafe Nikki

Steering away from the traditional buffet spread at other casinos, the Tropicana features a smaller “boutique buffet” for guests inside Cafe Nikki priced at $17.99. There’s also the still expanding South Beach Marketplace that gives guests a range of options including Starbucks, Pellegrino’s Pizza and an all new gourmet ice cream place.

Gaming & Other Amenities

There is a daily Tropicana Resort Fee of $9.99. This includes access to the Tropicana Fitness Center and free Wifi access throughout the resort. The Tropicana Spa is due to open in July 2011.

The Tropicana Players Club is currently offering their “Even the Odds” promotion. On the day new members join the Players Club, they have a $200 safe credit on their slot machine play. If you play the slots and lose on the day you join the Tropicana Players Club, the Tropicana will reimburse you up to $200 on your losses.

Note: the “Even the Odds” promotion does not apply to table games like blackjack, roulette or losses at the sportsbook, but it’s still a very attractive offer for first-time guests at the new and vastly improved Tropicana.

When it comes to Strip location, Mandalay Bay is the last grand resort on the South end of Las Vegas Blvd. And, while it may be tucked at the end, with most of the hype happening up towards Cosmopolitan and City Center, Mandalay Bay still is one of the more upscale resorts. Plus, it’s got the tram that whisks people down the block to Luxor and Excalibur, and closer to the heart of the Strip.

Great Entertainment Options

It’s easy to spend time at Mandalay. There’s plenty to do, including world-class dining and shopping. The Shoppes at Mandalay Bay, which connects the property to Luxor, includes the popular clothing store Urban Outfitters, as well as the bath and beauty store, Lush.

Rock out at The House of Blues

Mandalay is also loaded with entertainment options. Housed in the resort is The House of Blues that plays host to local and national acts, but also the Mandalay Bay Events Center which features concerts and big name fights. The hotel also has Shark Reef Aquarium, a family-friendly aquatic attraction focusing on predators of the deep sea. For theater, catch a performance of “The Lion King.”

One of the Best Pools in Las Vegas

Chances are the sun will be shining when you visit Vegas. Mandalay Bay has plenty of activities for people to enjoy outside. The Mandalay Bay Beach is 11 acres and includes a wave pool, lazy river, three swimming pools, a jogging track and more than 2,500 tons of sand to complete the beach experience. And, from May to September, the Mandalay Beach plays hosts to the beach concert series featuring well-known music acts. For those 21 and older, head over to the Moorea Beach Club. This outdoor South Beach-esque club features dipping pools, daybeds, poolside spa treatments and more.

Relax at The Spa

There are at least two ways to relax and unwind at Mandalay Bay. The first is the bathhouse, a unique 14,000 square foot spa with European slate walls, marble floors and water features. The bathhouse features a full salon, gym and spa treatments. There’s also Spa Mandalay, a 30,000 square foot world-class spa, for guests to indulge and be pampered.

Eat. Lots.

Red Square Las Vegas. Anyone for Vodka? How about Siberian Nachos?

In terms of dining, Mandalay Bay has a variety of options. For classic American cuisine, there’s Burger Bar. Craving Mexican? Head over to Border Grill with its gorgeous patio. Upscale options include Fleur by Hubert Keller which featured globally inspired small plates, Michael Mina’s STRIPSTEAK and Lupo by Wolfgang Puck. For even more international flavor, head over to Red Square, which serves up Russian dishes and international favorites with Russian twists. Other options include China Grill for Asian inspired dishes and Shanghai Lilly serving Cantonese and Szechwan. Popular restaurants also include Rick Moonen’s RM Seafood and Auereole. If it’s a view you are after, hit the elevator and head up to Mix on the top floor of THEhotel where you can eat, drink and soak in the Las Vegas skyline. In a rush? Mandalay also has a Starbucks for coffee, snacks and more.

Anyone for Cocktails?

There are a few options for those looking to strut their stuff at the resort. Get dressed up and head over to eyecandy sound lounge and bar for an interactive experience. Located in the heart of the casino floor, this lounge uses cool technology to create a unique personal sensory experience for guests. Patrons can create visuals and messaging that is projected onto the dance floor. For a more swanky option, there is Mix Lounge. Open nightly, the top floor lounge features cocktails, bar eats and a DJs to entertain while marveling at the lights of the city below.

Mandalay Bay Room Options

The two towers of Mandalay Bay are home to more than just Mandalay Bay. Four Seasons and THEhotel are both located within the property and feature upscale and hip accommodations at a higher price point. Mandalay Bay has a large selection of rooms to choose from. If a stunning view is what you want, the 550DR View Rooms provide great value. The rooms are basically named based on their size and type, so it’s pretty self-explanatory when booking. 550DR (550 square feet, deluxe room) is the lowest priced option. Then, there is the 600SS (Spa Suite), 750GR (Great Room), 1050SV (Sky View) and 1500 X2 and X3. There are even a few high-end suites to choose from at Mandalay Bay ranging in size from 1,700 square feet with panoramic views to more than 2,000 square feet.

Gaming

Feeling lucky? Mandalay’s tropical-themed casino spans 135,000 square feet. Table games include Baccarat, Blackjack, Pai Gow, Let it Ride, Poker (there’s also a popular poker room), Seven Card Stud, Craps and more. Love sports? Mandalay’s Race and Sports Book is world-class and offers 17 large televisions, along with 100 individual race seats with personal monitors. A part of MGM Resorts, M life is the players club at Mandalay and offers all sorts of perks for its members.

Luxury and value don’t often go hand-in-hand. But, at Monte Carlo Resort, you get a nice place to rest your head without denting the gambling budget too much. Plus, the property’s central location next to the new City Center and its tram that links the site to Crystal’s retail shops and the Bellagio make this a great place to call “home” during a Vegas Vacation.

Wide range of Dining Options

When the hunger pangs strike, there are a variety of options for dining at Monte Carlo. The perennial favorites at the property are Andre’s French Restaurant and Brand Steakhouse. While they are on the more “luxury” versus “value” side, both restaurants serve up great fare and are places to start any night on the town. Andre’s dishes contemporary French meals from well-known chef Andre Rochat. For a more casual option, try The Cafe, The Pub or enjoy casual Mexican food at Diablo’s Cantina. And, for those keeping a mindful eye on the wallet, the food court provides American staples — McDonald’s and Starbucks.

Affordable and luxurious AAA 4-Diamond Rooms

Upgrade to a Strip View Room for great views!

Monte Carlos’ rooms range from basic to uber swank. The Basic Deluxe Rooms, which offer AAA 4-Diamond rated comfort, are available with either queen or king beds. While somewhat basic, these are a good value for the money. If you crave a view of the Las Vegas skyline, book a Strip View Room. These rooms start on the 21st floor and provide stunning vistas of the entire Valley.

There are a few versions of suites at Monte Carlo: the Spa Suites are 700 square-feet of living and include a full-size Jacuzzi tub complete with views of the Valley, a king-size bed and a sitting area; Monaco Suites are a step-up from the Spa Suites — they are the same size but feature 1 1/2 baths, one of which includes a large master tub with whirlpool jets and a 32″ HDTV flat panel television; Diamond Suites are the size of a small apartment — 825 square-feet — and all are on the higher floors of the hotel, treating guests to views of the city. The room includes a separate master bedroom with king bed, 1 1/2 baths, a large wet bar and a two-person Jacuzzi.

For a more luxury experience, book in to HOTEL32, the new “hotel” within the hotel. Here, rooms range from studio to suite to lofts to penthouse. All feature modern design and maximum comfort. The hotel is located on the top floor of the Monte Carlo and aims to provide a celebrity VIP experience to all of its guests.

Las Vegas Action and Entertainment

The casino floor of Monte Carlo is always hopping, which is entertainment in itself. After scouting out the floor and perhaps rolling a few dice, enjoying the quiet of the poker room or betting on what team will win the next Super Bowl, head over to catch world famous dance crew The Jabbawockeez or world-class funnyman and impersonator Frank Caliendo.

Enjoy a relaxing morning at the Monte Carlo Pool

No Las Vegas resort is complete without a pool and the pool area at Monte Carlo does not disappoint. It has a small Lazy Boy river to enjoy catching some sun and idly moving along and a wave pool. However, like most pools in Las Vegas, if you aren’t up early to stake your lounge chair, there is a chance you won’t get one until way later in the day, thwarting the plans of splashing around and cooling off from the Vegas sun. And, also like most pools in Las Vegas, if you are aiming to relax and unwind, the large and often times loud crowd makes it a bit difficult to do so, especially on busy weekends. For a more upscale (and quieter) experience, head to neighboring hotels like Bellagio.

Bellagio For Free!

The Bellagio has some of the best Free Attractions in Vegas

For people who aren’t staying in the hotel, or have spent their small fortunes playing the cards, Bellagio still can entertain. It’s free attractions are some of the best on Las Vegas Boulevard. The infamous 8-acre lake with fountains, which dance, sway and spray to various musical numbers daily, draw crowds year-round. Catch the free spectacle Monday through Friday from 3 – 8 p.m. on the 1/2 hour, from 8 p.m. to midnight every 15 minutes; Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from noon to 8 p.m. every 1/2 hour. At night, the Fountains of Bellagio are lit up, exhibiting a powerful and magnificent display of beauty.

In the heat of the summer, step inside Bellagio and enjoy the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. Housed just beyond the lobby, the Conservatory and Gardens offer and seasonal exhibits displaying some of the most rare and stunning plants, flowers and trees, complete with picture perfect bridges, gazebos, ponds and more. In the winter, exhibits include a special holiday (think cranberry-filled ponds and snow) and Chinese New Year displays. Check out the Conservatory & Gardens anytime — it is open 24/7.

Rooms at The Bellagio

The AAA Five Diamdon property offers luxury beyond the norm. Depending on budget, Bellagio offers guest rooms, guest suites and the ultra luxe villas. Guest rooms range from 510 to 628 sq. feet and come in three varieties: Bellago King, Bellagio Queen and Bellagio Deluxe King. All feature plush bedding, rich colors and scenic views of the Las Vegas Valley.

For even more decadence, guests can book a suite. Bellagio offers three styles — Salone, Bellagio and Cypress Suites. The cozy Salone Suite measures in at 853 sq. feet and comes complete with a whirlpool tub and separate shower. The Bellagio Suite is more than 1,000 sq. feet and includes a living room and bedroom, separate powder room, along with his and her baths (his has a steam showers, hers has a whirlpool tub) and more. For an even sweeter luxury experience, there is the Cypress Suite. Reservations for the 1,525 sq. foot, arc-shaped suite can only be made by calling the property. The suite promises spectacular views of The Strip, along with the an open floor plan blending the living room, dining room and sleeping area; his and hers baths; and a nightly turndown service.

The ultra exclusive villas at Bellagio give guests a taste of true indulgent living. Nine private estates come in two styles: the 6,500 sq. foot 2 bedroom/5 bath and the 8,000 sq. foot, 3 bedroom/7 bath villas. Each features an in-suite workout facility, massage room, dry sauna, and more. Need to have a quick trim? Every villa includes a private hair salon. For entertaining, villas include a private kitchen, dining room and a fully-stocked bar with guests’ favorite beverages. For unwinding, there are dual fireplaces, private terraces and gardens complete with pools and whirlpools. It gets even better — amenities also include limousine service; Michael Kors’ products and fresh fruit and flowers upon arrival.

Fine Dining at Bellagio

Bellagio also features some of the best dining options in Las Vegas. For a delicious culinary experience, reserve a table at Prime Steakhouse, Picasso or Le Cirque.

Prime Steakhouse, helmed by executive chef Sean Griffin, is an award-winning steakhouse from celeb chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and serves up melt-in-your-mouth steaks, seafood and lamb. With ambiance that captures the 1930s speakeasies, diners are transported into a world otuside of Las Vegas. After enjoying the dishes, step outside to the garden patio for a post-meal cocktail and enjoy the nighttime sky of Sin City.

If choosing a restaurant on awards alone, Picasso is a natural. A recipient of the annual AAA Five Diamond Award, is is a sure-to-impress dining experience complete with walls adorned with Picasso paintings. Aside from a wine cellar with more than 1,500 selections from some of European’s finest vineyards, Executive Chef Julian Serrano’s menu changes daily and brings to life French and Spanish cuisine in the heart of the desert.

And, then there is Le Cirque. Also a recipient of the Five Diamond award, the French menu of steak, fish, chicken, rabbit, lobster, duck, veal, are just some of the highlights of the enticing and delcious menu by Executive Chef David Werly. Enjoy the creation of Restaurateur Sirio Maccioni, situated on Bellagio’s lake — it’s atmosphere is as lively as the tasty cuisine.

Aside from fine dining, Bellagio has other mouthwatering options. Todd English’s Olives is popular with the locals and has gorgeous patio seating to take in the fountain spectacle. Jaime Mendoza, Olives’ Executive Chef, has created some amazing Mediterranean-style dishes to enjoy while soaking in the stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip.

Relaxation

Walking, gambling, eating … relaxing. Bellagio has become known for both its pool and spa, Rejuvenate. Locals regularly rank both as some of the best in town. The Mediterranean-inspired pool includes plush cabanas, lounge chairs, and of course, drink service to wrap any day in perfection. As if that wasn’t enough, it is open year-round (unlike some other resort pools in Las Vegas) and is heated allowing visitors to unwind even during the winter and lower temperatures.

Rejuvenate, the 65,000 square-foot oasis of calm and tranquility, provides some of the most decadent services in Las Vegas. From special caviar facials to poolside massages, and a myriad of packages, there is something for everyone. Check out Rejuvenate’s world therapies, including aquastretching, Raindrop therapy, Thai Yoga massages and the Indian Head massage.

Bars, Lounged and Nightlife

Following an afternoon of relaxation, sip an afternoon tea at Petrossian Lounge. Named one of America’s best hotel bars by Sante Magazine, the lounge opens every afternoon for a traditional tea service from 2 – 5 p.m. Service includes traditional tea menu items, as well as a variety of imported international teas.

Bellagio has no shortage of nightlife. Start the evening with drinks at the lakeside Fontana Bar. Sit outside and watch the fountains, or head inside to enjoy live entertainment complete with a dance floor. Then, head over to Caramel Bar & Lounge, the swanky ultra-lounge nestled in the casino, before capping the night off at The Bank, an upscale nightclub pumping out the ultimate club experience until 4 a.m. It brings in the beautiful people, big name celebs and world-class DJs to create a massive party.

Don’t Miss Out!

There’s more! Be sure to sample a sweet morsel from Jean-Philippe Patisserie before checking out. The European-style pastry shop serves the famous pastry chef’s chocolates, cookies, light fare and more. And, there’s a chocolate fountain.

Finally, the Bellagio experience is not complete without taking in a Cirque du Soleil performance. The beautiful “O” is housed at Bellagio and treats the audience to a visual spectacle beyond the imagination, set in, on and above a stage of water.

For dinner reserve a table on the patio at SW Steakhouse or head over to Encore to enjoy Italian cuisine at the atmospheric Sinatra or a great steak at Botero. Budget conscious foodies should check out some of the great prix fix options currently offered on the Taste of Wynn Menus. Offered during off peak dining hours these reasonably priced menus provide an affordable opportunity to dine at some of the best restaurants in town. Foodie’s that aren’t concerned about budget, often head to the ultra pricey Alex at Wynn, a French fine dining restaurant with two Michelin stars.

For popular and casual late night dining one of our favorite spots is the stylish Stratta where a special starlight menu is served Thursday through Monday from 11pm to 4am. Other casual dining options include ZooZaCrackers, a great New York style deli, and the Buffet.

Exciting Nightlife at Wynn Las Vegas

The Wynn Las Vegas provides a great selection of bars where you can sit back and people watch, or meet up with your friends to enjoy a preshow cocktail. One of our favorite spots to enjoy a relaxing drink is Parasol Down where you can watch the lakeside light show through the windows opposite the bar.

When you are ready to party, head to Blush or Tryst at Wynn, or XS at Encore. Of the clubs at Wynn, Blush is more of a lounge like atmosphere. Over at Encore XS is one of the current hot spots in Vegas, with a gorgeous outdoor beach club setting.

Pools and Spa at Wynn

When the weather is nice, there is no better way to spend the morning than lounging by the pool. The pool area at Wynn isn’t spectacular but is well maintained with manicured shrubbery and ranks as one of our favorite pools for relaxing at. If you stay at Encore Tower Suites or at Wynn Tower suites then you should enjoy The Wynn’s Tower Suites pool, which is a private pool area reserved for tower suites guests. If you enjoy an exclusive pool atmosphere this is one of the best in town.

After partying all night, both Wynn and Encore provide great Spa’s where hotel guests can pamper themselves and rejuvenate. The prices are comparable at both spas and both spas provide an excellent menu of massages, body treatments and facials.

Wynn Las Vegas has it’s own Golf Course

Wynn is one of the few hotels in Vegas to feature an on-site course. Without a doubt Wynn is one of the best strip resorts with a golf course although very pricey. Weekday summer rates start at around $300 per player and you must be a guest to play.

The new Aria Resort & Casino opened December 16, 2009 on the Las Vegas Strip. Located between the Monte Carlo and Bellagio resorts, it is the latest crown jewel of MGM/Mirage properties. As part of the new, very impressive City Center, Aria is the most public of the five buildings that make up the mega-plex. Other buildings include Vdara and Mandarin, two nongaming resort/condominium towers, Crystals, a high-end shopping center and the Harmon, a private condominium tower not yet open.

The Aria Resort features 4,004 guest rooms, an 80,000 square foot two-level spa, a 150,000 square foot casino, 300,000 square feet of meeting space, three pools (one adults only!), sixteen restaurants, ten bars and the 1,840-seat Elvis Theater.

Elvis fans should be especially interested in visiting Aria. The new Viva ELVIS™ by Cirque du Soleil® opens with a gala premiere February 19, 2010. Tickets are priced between $120-$200 including tax and fees.

Aside from the architecture, there are many large, public displays of art throughout Aria and the rest of City Center to capture your attention. The vast array of glinting gold and travertine marble surfaces will dazzle your eyes. Plus, a walk through Crystals, the high-end shopping mall, is worth it even just to window shop.

There’s even been a lucky mega-jackpot winner at Aria already. Value and luxury come together at the Golden Nugget’s new Rush Tower in historic downtown Las Vegas. The $150 million development opened in late November 2009 and adds an element of sophisticated elegance to the one true resort on Freemont Street.

From the floating reservation desk to the 500 new, well-appointed rooms and suites that are 20% larger than regular rooms at the Nugget, the investment in luxury shows. Rush Tower also includes four two-level penthouse suites and 70 corner suites that either showcase incredible views of the Las Vegas Strip or the famous Golden Nugget pool. Standard features for all the new rooms include pillow-top mattresses, feather down comforters and 42” plasma TV’s. Other amenities include iHome docking stations so you can play your own music, deep soaking tubs and Raintree showers.

For seafood lovers, the new Rush Tower also entices guests with the Chart House Aquarium Restaurant, which features a custom-designed menu with numerous specialty items and a 75,000-gallon tropical aquarium filled with over a thousand exotic and colorful fish. The sleek, aquamarine interior is clearly inspired by the sea and will make you completely forget that you’re in the middle of the Mojave Desert, even in the hottest summer months. For guests that want to take advantage of the warm Las Vegas sun, they can relax by the tower’s two-level infinity-edge pool. Surrounded by six ultra plush cabanas and covered lounging areas, the Rush Tower pool adjoins the third level of the Golden Nugget shark aquarium and pool, which was voted Top Ten Pools of the World by Forbes magazine after it opened in 2006.

Rooms in the new Rush Tower (excluding tax) start at about $100/night during the week and $150/night on Fridays and Saturdays. The corner suites go for about $150/night during the week and $175/night on week-ends. The penthouses go for about $350-400/night. When booking a room for a multiple night stay, ask for a $50 or $75 casino credit good at any of the Golden Nugget restaurants, or a couple of day passes to the Golden Nugget spa.
